What "balance" actually means

Fantasy contests are won by teams that look boring on paper. A balanced side has one anchor, one accelerator, one death-over specialist, one part-time option and a bowling shape that does not double up at one length. We start every XI from that template, then adjust it by reading the surface.

A flat track at the Wankhede does not need three top-order batters. A slow turner in Chennai does. The selection method is the same in both cases — name the role each slot has to do, then pick the player whose recent record matches the role for the conditions you expect.

The salary-cap shortcut that keeps failing

Players who are cheap because nobody wants them are cheap because their ceiling is low. Players who are expensive because everyone wants them are expensive because their ceiling is high. The mistake is to treat the salary cap as a budget rather than a distribution: spend up to the point where the next rupee buys less than the last one.

In practice that means a captain, two or three premiums, a hand-picked differential and a punt at the bottom of the order. Anything else is buying a logo, not a player.

Captaincy notes that survive contact with reality

Pick the captain for the role, not the form. A powerplay batter on a flat deck with square boundaries is worth 1.6× because the role is fixed even when the form is not. Pick the vice-captain from the other end of the script — if the captaincy pick is "bat first on a flat track", the vice-captain should be a chase bowler who takes the new ball.

The weekly routine

• Sunday — read the fixture list and tag each match by surface.
• Monday — pick two role-anchors per match, write one line each.
• Tuesday — write the differential shortlist (three names per match, ranked by role fit).
• Match day — re-read your notes after the toss and trim one name before locking.
