Three captaincy traps

The first trap is naming the form batter without reading the role. A 60-ball batter in form on a slow turner is a downgrade on a 40-ball batter in form on a flat track. The second trap is naming the same captain in back-to-back matches when the fixture flips venue. The third trap is naming the home captain because they are the home captain.

The transfer window

Most fantasy apps give you a small number of transfers per cycle. Use them in the first third of the cycle, not the last third. The reason is that early transfers compound: a transfer on day two still earns points on day three. A transfer on day seven earns one day of points.

Contests we quietly stop entering

Winner-takes-all contests with more than 5,000 entries have an expected value below the entry fee for almost every team. We stop entering them once the entry count crosses that line. Mega-contests with rolling prizes are different: the expected value is closer to the entry fee but the variance is high, so we cap our exposure.

Bankroll rules we follow

• Cap weekly spend at 2% of bankroll across all contests.
• Stop the week at the cap, regardless of result.
• Track every entry in a spreadsheet before kickoff.
• Re-read the spreadsheet on Sunday morning before the next week starts.
